The sonarechoes create a "snapshot" of the area directly below the boat. Humminbird's exclusive software analyzes the echoes to pinpoint their location and ensure that only the structure and activity directly below the boat are shown, and not to either side. UNDERSTANDING SIDE IMAGING Humminbird Side Imaging Sonar uses a razor-thin beam to create a sonar snapshot to the left and right of the boat. The returned image is just a thin slice that is added to the image already displayed, resulting in an incredibly detailed picture of the bottom. THE SPLIT DISPLAY EXPLAINED: The dark area in the middle is easiest to understand; it is the open water directly beneath the boat. Mentally fold the image on the screen in half once, then fold it again on both sides as shown, at the darkest point furthest from the center of the screen. This is the deepest point of the water.
